Review: Missha M Signature Real Complete BB Cream

I’m not exaggerating when I say I’m probably the pickiest person alive when it comes to foundations, including BB creams.  I have incredibly high standards (some would probably say impossibly high) and in the past I’ve mostly dealt with disappointment.  Usually because I have a hard time matching my skin color.  And when I do find the right color, it causes acne, or doesn’t cover my pores enough, or doesn’t provide enough coverage, or is too thick and looks like a mask.  Really, there are so many different reasons why I’ve never been able to find one that I really like, and I’ve returned dozens of bottles and tubes to Sephora over the years.

Despite my previous failures, I haven’t stopped trying to find the perfect foundation.  In the last two months alone I’ve bought and tried 3 different foundations, plus dozens of samples.  They didn’t make the cut.  I don’t even consider it worth my time to review them.  But I’m happy to say that I finally found one that I think is worth my time to review and to keep using: Missha M Signature Real Complete BB Cream.  It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty damn close!  And this product is yet another reason why I *heart* Korean skincare!

Review: Mizon Skin Power Original First Essence

Ever since SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence grew in popularity, several Asian companies came out with their own  – and much cheaper – versions.

Mizon Skin Power Original First Essence

Mizon Skin Power Original First Essence is Mizon’s interpretation of SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence, and I got it on a whim because I found it on sale and I’ve always been curious about trying a fermentation essence.

Review: The Face Shop Sebum Control Moisture Sun

The Face Shop sebum control sun

The last time I was living in Japan (yikes, already almost 10 years ago!), I tried several different sunscreens, and I remember being really impressed with them.  Even 10 years ago, Japan was more advanced than what we have in the US today.  The Face Shop Sebum Control Moisture Sun was the first time I used a Korean sunscreen, and it did not disappoint!  And it also confirmed to me that Asian companies just understand how sunscreens are supposed to work and feel on the skin.

Updated Review: Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Moisture Watery Cream

In a previous post, I reviewed Nature Republic’s Super Aqua Max Moisture Watery Cream.  You can read my original post here, where I went into detail about the feel and moisturizing effect of this cream. Overall, while I liked the cream as a day moisturizer, I wasn’t really sure how beneficial the ingredients were, so ultimately I gave this moisturizer an 8/10, but I only gave the ingredients 7/10.

Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Moisture Watery Cream

Well, on a particularly boring evening, I decided to actually do some research on the dozens of different extracts in this moisturizer, and I am now pleasantly surprised with what I found!  Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Moisture Watery Cream is actually filled with antioxidants and soothing ingredients, some have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine.  I realized that I needed to update my original review and give this moisturizer a new grade.  So the following is an expansion on my original review, with more details on the ingredients.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: How to Properly Take Care of (and Possibly Reduce) Enlarged Pores

My favorite part of the coldest months here in Chicago is that the markets always have a steady stream of mikan (clementines).  Those juicy & sweet little oranges instantly transfer me back to my childhood spending winters in Japan, sitting at a kotatsu, watching cartoons and eating mikan after mikan until I was so full I’d fall asleep under the kotatsu like a cat… And while mikan is one of my favorite fruits, I hate that over the last few winters, I’ve noticed the texture of my skin become more and more like a mikan, with crazy enlarged pores.

How to take care of enlarged pores

In horror, over the last 3 years, I’ve noticed that my enlarged pores spread from closest to my nose, to down across my cheeks.  And I noticed them getting noticeably worse during the winter months.  Nothing I did made them better.  In fact, I know now that I probably did more harm than good.  Unfortunately, everything I read in the past about reducing enlarged pores didn’t help, and probably made it worse with products that were too harsh for my skin.  But since discovering Korean skincare, I’ve learned to nurture my skin with milder products, with amazing results.  In doing so, I’ve finally(!) understood what was making my pores become enlarged over the years, and finally(!) begin to properly take care of them.

After less than 3 months of practicing my new skincare philosophy, I’m excited to see a reduction in my enlarged pores.  Some of them have reduced by as much as 1/2 it’s original size!  And I’m hoping that they’ll reduce more over time.  Even if they don’t, I’m just glad that I’ve finally learned to properly take care of my pores and hopefully never have them grow dramatically on me again!

The condition of your pores is a really good indication of the overall health of your skin.  So don’t just cover them up with primer and makeup.  Pay attention to them and see how they respond to your skincare products.  Once you do, I promise you’ll start to understand how to take care of them too!

Review: Mizon Returning Starfish Cream

Mizon Returning Starfish Cream

I love the name of this cream because it reminds me of the wonderfully weird and funny Japlish terms on so many Japanese products.  I’m sure a lot of products in Korea have the same!  Cute name aside, this is a serious moisturizing cream in probably the most beautiful packaging I’ve ever had the pleasure to use.  Mizon Returning Starfish Cream is also another example of the amazing quality of Mizon’s products, and why I am now a loyal Mizon user!

Review: Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner

Out of all the Korean products that I ordered, this toner was the one that I was least sure about.  I got this as more of an experiment in how my skin would tolerate low pH products.  And because of reasons I’ll explain further, I really didn’t expect to like this product so much.  But surprise, surprise, Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner, coupled with my BHA exfoliator has ended up being crucial to balancing my skin out and keep it acne free.  I’ve tried both the older version of this toner and the newer version, and I’m happy to say that I love the newer version just as much!

Review: Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Moisture Watery Cream

Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Moisture Watery Cream

So if you read my previous post on Nature Republic’s Combination Watery Cream, you’re probably surprised that I would give anything else in this line a chance.  But, I received a sample of this cream from Korea Depart, and opened the sample with trepidation.  I was happily surprised with a slight smell of roses coming from this cream (and not the obnoxious Axe deodorant smell that was in the Combination Watery Cream).  So I found someone from Hawaii selling a bottle of Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Moisture Watery Cream on Amazon, and I went for it.

Review: Skin Food Egg White Pore Cleansing Oil & Pore Foam

Skinfood Egg White Pore Cleansing Oil Foam

This cleansing set was the first time I tried the famous Korean double-cleansing method and I really liked it! Definitely saw an improvement right away with this double-cleansing method.  So for those who don’t know, a cleansing oil removes all impurities and makeup, while the foam cleanser cleans the residue and leaves your skin completely grime free!  While overall I really liked Skin Food Egg White Pore Cleansing Oil and Skin Food Egg White Pore Foam, I decided to try other cleansers for reasons that I will explain…
